Gabriel Garrick

Trumpet & Flugelhorn

About Gabriel Garrick

Born into a musical family, the second of three sons, Gabriel took up the trumpet aged seven and started gigging at an early age with his father and older brother. He has had exposure to a wealth of different musicians representing different genres since his early childhood. Jam sessions, dinners and jokes were a regular occurrence at the Dankworth's house..!

As a teenager Gabriel played with the multi award winning Aylesbury Music Centre Big Band, the Dacorum Brass Band, the Hemel  Hempstead Brass Band, Dacorum Youth Orchestra, the Dacorum Wind Band and started his own jazz trio at school.

Gabriel attended the Royal Academy of Music jazz course from 1991 to 1995.  Whilst at the Academy he worked with the National Youth Jazz Orchestra.

Since then he has worked with many well respected bands, including The John Dankworth Generation Band, Mike Garrick Jazz Orchestra, Derek Nash's Sax Appeal Big Band, Nick Ross Orchestra, Len Phillips Big Band, Pete Cater Big Band, Gerard Presencer Big Band, Big Band Metheny, Willie Garnett Big Band, Kai's Cats, King Candy and the Sugar Push, Feast of Fiddles, The Blues Brothers Experience, The FBI, Utter Madness, Payback, Gloria Scott, The Rat Pack Show, Maroon Town and countless other bands in all styles, touring the British Isles, Europe and across the world.

Gabriel has performed with a host of musicians. A small selection includes: Arturo Sandoval, Jack DeJohnette, Chucho Valdez, John Dankworth, Cleo Laine, Nigel Kennedy, Digby Fairweather, Guy Barker, Alan Barnes, Norma Winstone, Henry Lowther, Kenny Wheeler, Anita Wardell, Mark Nightngale, Steve Waterman, Alex Garnett, Nigel Hitchcock, Colin Campbell.. Gabriel performs regularly at Ronnie Scott's and has played at The Royal Albert Hall, The Barbican, The Southbank Centre and most major and small jazz clubs in the country as well as having had the wonderful experience of playing at an intimate Christmas cocktail soiree for Princess Diana at Kensington Palace along with father Mike and brother Chris. Elton John and George Michael were amongst the 200 guests..

Gabriel has broadcast on Radio 3 and many other radio stations in live situations and on recorded shows. Television appearances have happened but as Gabriel feels that this medium is by far the greatest 'lie-teller' he avoids it.

Gabriel leads various groups of his own, currently his interests are his 'Expansions', the 'Original Quintet', the 'Swinging Standards Septet' and of course the 'Gabriel Garrick Big Band'. Past projects have included 'Squeela''TripTrio' and 'Passengers'.

Education is a passion for Gabriel. Not only does he direct the Michael Garrick founded Jazz Academy holiday courses but private tuition is ongoing to all ages at all  standards;  in one on one situations to workshops and rehearsing bands. Please contact Gabriel for any enquiries.

Gabriel is experienced in and available for all types of freelance work from studio sessions to live performances.
