Children Of Time - Michael Garrick jazz orchestra with Norma Winstone.
Challenging. Awe-inspiring and in no small measure thought provoking; As ground breaking as was Holst's Planets Suite in it's time, Children Of Time will literally carry your appreciation of jazz big band concepts to another planet.. A must have for any serious Mike Garrick collector.
'Children of Time' is an original work for big band by the veteran jazz composer and pianist Michael Garrick which features the voice of one of the UK's greatest vocalists, Norma Winstone. She is backed by Garrick's Jazz Britannia Orchestra, the band that appeared at the celebration of British jazz that Gilles Peterson curated at the Barbican in 2004. The new recording reunites him with Norma Winstone for the first time since 1973. Garrick describes 'Children of Time' as a "kind of space odyssey" and he has set to music text from the book of Genesis, the Eucharist and Garrick's own Underground Streams and Heavenly Bodies. Musical influences include Ellington and Basie and featured musicians include drummer Alan Jackson, trumpeter Steve Waterman and saxophonists Matt Wates and Jamie Anderson. Personnel: Michael Garrick (piano), Norma Winstone (vocals), Martin Shaw, Steve Waterman, Gabriel Garrick (trumpets), Mark da Silva, Alistair White, Dave Eaglestone (trombones), Martin Hathaway, Matt Wates, Bob McKay, Jamie Anderson, Mick Foster (saxophones), Dominic Ashworth (guitar), Paul Moylan (bass), Alan Jackson (drums)
